Who does not like finding free software to use? It does not matter what you are trying to do, if you can find a free, workable software then you can bet that you will take the time to download it and check it out. People who like to use mind mapping software to brainstorm their ideas often find plenty of free software to use. One software program that seems to have a wide following is FreeMind. But before you download and use it, you have to first determine if it is worth your time and effort.
FreeMind is a relatively easy to use software that anyone can use. It is a simple Window’s based program that lets you organize thoughts you may have, or your team may have, regarding a problem. It can also be used by individuals who need some way to jump start the creative thinking process. You simply download the program from any number of free share sites and then install it.
The user interface is pretty simple. You can put in thoughts, words or even sentences into a diagram. The diagram resembles a tree somewhat. You have the central topic in a bold color and then you have lines, or thought boxes, that come off of the main idea. The goal is to get you to creatively brainstorm on the central topic until you have reached a logical conclusion or find the answer that you seek. Some people might use meditation but those more technologically gifted turn to software programs. But there is a problem with the software. Many people are finding that the program has bugs or issues which prevent more of the basic uses. That has to make you wonder if it is truly worth your time and effort.
Some people will question whether or not the editors at Cnet.com actually investigate and try out software programs or if they simply just give them random stars based on user reviews. The answer is that the editors really do research and try out the software before giving it a positive or negative review. In the case of FreeMind the editors and the users gave the software four out of five stars. The only catch they made was to make sure to use version 0.8.1 so you would not run into any spyware. All in all it seems like this mind mapping software is definitely worth you taking a look at and trying out.
