Let me tell you a little about the History of Scrabble…

History of Scrabble

The history of Scrabble started with the invention of a similar game by the name of Lexiko, invented in 1938, however the manufacturing rights were sold to and purchased by James Brunot in 1948. Burnot changed the name to Scrabble after revising its rules and basic structure of the game. However, the games biggest break or change was given in 1952, when Jack Strauss, the president of Macy’s found and discovered the game and was charmed by it so much, he decided to get involved.

Jack Strauss thought everyone and every household should have a game of Scrabble on hand and began the selling of very large quantities for that time period, and consequently, Brunot was not able to keep up with the numerous orders and sold the game rights to Selchow & Righter soon after in hopes that they could keep up with the demand.

As time passed, the game of Scrabble has changed hands from time to time, although its concept has stayed the same and the basics of the game have remained in tack. In 1984, Scrabble was produced as a television game show, with millions of viewers watching to see how fast people could make new words and ultimately win the game for cash.

A 15 by 15 square grid makes up the game board, with each of them being able to provide accommodation for a single letter tile that sometimes change in value, depending on the location. 98 letter tiles which range in points from one to ten in their value are used to make scores, while there are small points given for common letters and harder to use letters, such as Z and Q offer higher points. Zero points are given for 2 blank tiles that are useful for substituting any letter kinda like a joker or wild card. The game board features colorful squares, which when played can double and triple your score and when play wisely can really rack up the points.

Basic Game Setup

Determining who plays first is always the start by every player drawing a tile form the bag. The closest tile to the beginning of the alphabet always goes first unless some other house rule has been discussed. Seven tiles are then drawn by each player to begin the game. During a players turn, he or she can form a word on the board and score points or pass on their turn, or they can exchange some of their tiles for tiles still in the bag.

Words are formed from the center of the board by the first player, then she or he will draw more tiles to replace those which were used from their rack, keeping a total of 7 and not more. You can score points while making words of the various letter tiles, as words may be formed going up, down or across the board grids accordingly. The game is complete when someone either plays all of their seven tiles on their rack or there are none in the bag to draw from, or when six scoreless turns in a row have occurred with a score no more that zero – zero. The scores are tallied once the players subtract any points left on his or her rack.

Playing Scrabble free online is a fairly new phenomenon, as there are various websites that offer gamers to play Scrabble online free, against other online players. However, the name is different on many sites to avoid being taken to court by Hasbro and Mattel, the current makers of the game.

Computer Gaming Headsets For Tactical Superiority

Computer gaming has long relied on the use of communication among players to function as a more effective unit. This is particularly true among heavily team oriented genres, like massively multiplayer online, real time strategy, and first person shooter gamers, an example of each being World of Warcraft, Company of Heroes, and Counter-Strike. Traditionally, this would have been done simply by typing to the other player, but this was a horrible inconvenience when taking the time to type an entire sentence out could result in a lack of focus on more pressing concerns. Therefore, computer gaming headsets have been becoming more popular every year to give players more freedom to play the game while increasing the speed of communications among players.

Extra Game Processing

Many computer gaming headsets are designed specifically with gaming in mind. That means that many models actually include game processing technology chips inside (at least, if they are USB), so audio quality will be superb, giving players crystal clear stereo or (in the past year or so) surround sound audio with dozens or even a hundred different audio channels at once. However, one of these headsets can also function as a computer phone headset, so you can talk to your buddies on Ventrilo, TeamSpeak or Skype as needed with the same level of audio fidelity.

USB computer gaming headsets, as mentioned previously, often include some type of processor built in because they don’t use the processor on sound cards in your computer. Therefore, the only way to get similar levels of audio fidelity is to do the processing right on the headset, so you aren’t left with decreased audio quality just because you aren’t using your X-Fi sound card from Creative. However, you can still likely get a slightly higher level of audio fidelity from your computer gaming headset if you purchase one that can hook into your sound card, as the sound card likely has a much more powerful audio processor located on it.

Some good computer gaming headsets include Sennheiser, Logitech and Plantronics, although there are many different companies out there that offer great products. To get a better idea about the relative quality of a particular headset, head online and check out sites that offer reviews of the products (doesn’t matter between customer and professional reviews of products). Even if you just go out to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and pick up a modestly priced headset, you likely won’t be disappointed with its performance. For the quickest and most efficient type of communication in games, you need a computer gaming headset.

Evolution Of Gaming- Where Do We Go Next?

With as far as games have come along through history, it’s tough to say where we could possibly go next. I mean really, we have witnessed the evolution of the board game into the computer game, then the computer game to the arcade game as well as the television requiring console (we’ll call it the early console- like Atari), then, from the early console evolved the high graphic output consoles and portables of today. The latest console phenomenon, the Wii, has even taken the gaming experience a bit further to add the first “virtual” aspect to gaming in the form of a 3 dimensional sensing remote!

So, where does gaming go next? Will it ever become completely virtual? I guess only time will tell but it appears that just about anything is a reality and the gaming industry continues to push the envelope to give gamers the most realistic experience possible.

Here is an overview of the history behind the evolution of gaming:

1947- The Cathode-Ray Tube was developed and patented by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr and Estle Ray Mann. It was used to simulate missile firing patterns at a target and had knobs to adjust curve and speed of the path

1952- “OXO”, an early version of Tic-Tac-Toe was created by A.S. Douglas as a demonstration of human-computer interaction.

1958- William Higinbotham created a game called “Tennis for Two” on his analog computer and amused visitors to the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York

1960s- People started creating their own games from university mainframe computers as a hobby since access to computers was still scarce. Games like “Spacewar!”, “Chase”, and “Space Travel” were created.

1970s- The Golden Age of Gaming. Computer game development took several different directions- arcade machines, handhelds and personal computers. Galaxy Game became the first coin operated arcade game and Atari was released.

1908s- Publishing Houses appeared and games in various genres emerged. Pseudo-3D graphics began to be used. This was the era that Pac-Man, Zork and the Legend of Zelda were released. It was also the beginning of online internet gaming, handheld LCD games and the first Nintendo Console.

1990s- This period was all about maturing what was already developed. It was about perfection. It was also the time period that the Sims series emerged. Arcade games declined and handhelds started to take the shape they are in today. MMORPGs took shape and Playstation emerged.

And that takes us to today… Xbox, Playstation, Wii- systems with extreme graphic abilities and tons of realism. I don’t know how it could possibly get much better….

Online Multi-Player Games

ToonTown, Pirates Online- and that’s just the Disney ones!  Online Multi-player games seem to be shooting up left and right these days.

The draw to these games  is that the social aspect makes the game different each and every time you play.  You can talk to different people, proceed through the game at your own pace without ever getting bored if you aren’t focusing on your tasks to move forward and can access any and every part of the world regardless of the level of the game you are currently at.

In addition, a number of these games allow you to create your own character from head to toe (literally).  You decide their look, their clothing, their sex and their name.  This just makes you feel more a part of the game in general- your character shows your personality.

In terms of age appropriateness and censorship, most multi-player online games that have chat available either supply a list of appropriate sayings or only enable chat with parental approval, so there is not as much of a worry about who your child might be talking to.
