Gaming: Not Just for Couch Potatoes Anymore!

Lots of people think video gaming is not a healthy leisure hobby for children, or anybody for that matter. They feel that video gaming is just another excuse to be a couch potato in front of the TV screen.

Staying inactive is not healthy way of life and fortunately, as people are realizing the negative effects of latency, so too are video game creators. The most notable push toward uniting physical activity with gaming being the introduction of the Wii Console.

The Wii Console enables gamers to literally “get in” the game with the introduction of motion-sensitive controllers that record a players actions on 3 planes; try multi-dimensional game play.

Additionally, the wii allows users to create their own mini character called the “Mii” which can be designed any way the player sees fit.

In terms of games that suit this style of gaming and get people moving, Wii gamers can enjoy dance games such as Dance Dance Revolution, sports games like Mario Super Sluggers, We Ski and Tiger Woods Golf and even fitness programs like Wii Fit.

All in all, physical gaming is a welcome change for a world that becomes ever increasingly sedentary and out of shape.  Next step- Virtual Reality gaming!  Won’t that be a treat! :p

The Social Side of Gaming

First of all, it is intensely ironic that “gaming” for many years, was regarded as an anti-social practice.  It was felt that gaming was bad for children since it kept them holed up in their rooms staring at a computer or television screen for hours with little to no human conversation or contact.

My, my how things have changed for the gaming hobby….

As gaming has becomes a more popular pratice among children and adults alike, gamers have found an outlet to bridge the gap between their love for gaming and human contact with the formation of online gaming communities!

These communities not only enable gamers to share their favorite games with like-minded individuals, but also allows them to take their favorite game to another level by joining clans or guilds.

A clan or guild is a group of players who regularly play together in a particular (or various different) multiplayer games.  It could be anywhere for a couple of friends playing together to hundreds of people in a more organized setting.

Typically, there are “ranks” assigned to clan/guild members based on their experience.  Smaller groups might have a single leader whereas larger organizations might have 2 or more.

The benefits of joining a clan is not only limited to engaging in some sort of social contact with others.  It’s also a way to share information with others and learn from others to progress through levels of gameplay.

Additionally, there may be competitive benefits.  Some clans run competitions or scrimmages and taking part enables a gamer to socially tout their skills.

Getting Paid to Play Video Games

Video game testers hold a critical position in the game industry. The video game creators as well as computer programmers spend years making & designing the games but testers are one who ensures that the game is set to release.

Not All Fun & Games

It might sound like a dream job to any gaming enthusiast. Who would not want to make a living just by playing the games everyday? In reality however, video game testing can be exhausting. Testers often start working with the game well before it is finished, and are required to maintain careful records of each bug that they find in the game. At times it takes hours just to go through a level since you need to pause the game often to record bugs.

To become a video game tester, all that is required of you is solid writing skills, the ability to communicate efficiently, and you must have a keen eye and solid grasp of common game bugs. After all, the bugs can vary from something very small like a missing brick in the wall or ear on character, to main issues, which halt play entirely. You will need to file each and every single error.

Know Your Business

Video game tester are essentially the quality control staff.  In terms of getting hired for the job, here are a couple tips to help you rank high in the eyes of your interviewers:

  • Know the “gaming lingo”- you are going to be keeping solid notes as you test, so it would be helpful to them if you can write as if you know what you are talking about
  • Once you get the coveted interview, never merely talk about how much you adore gaming; get prepared to converse about the company itself as well as your promise to maintain high quality work. It may even benefit you to test all games made by the particular company before your interview so that you can show that you understand their business.
  • Show your eagerness and excitement.  If you can’t show you drive for gaming in the interview, your interviewers probably won’t see you as a good candidate for testing.
