Mind mapping software is currently being embraced by business in a big way. Gone are the simpler days of using the white board or easel in the conference room to write down concepts and relate them to each other with big circles and lines going from idea to idea. While this, too, was mind mapping, it was on a very small scale, relatively speaking. In the past few years, mindmap software has replaced paper and felt pen methods, and changed many of the ways in which companies organize themselves.
One large area of infiltration into business involves project management. Mind maps can be used at any stage of a project to store ideas, keep track of issues that arise, assess strengths and weaknesses, follow resources, and record general notes as the venture progresses. On a master mind map, each project stage can be represented as a bubble or an element on a flowchart and linked to other mind maps with further information. In a way, what this mind mapping software does is operate as a cross between sets of flow charts and spreadsheets. But everything is in a more visual, less linear form.
It might have taken a while for the business or project manager in a company to recognize the utility of mind map techniques, because they were first taught in relation to education. Of course businesses were engaged in training, and mind mapping software might even have been used in those courses at times. But managers would likely have thought of those programs only in terms of helping employees learn to do their jobs better. No one, at first, thought of the programs themselves as being tools to use in the jobs themselves.
However, until mind mapping software was usable company-wide rather than only on an individual computer terminal, it didn’t help relieve the bottleneck in the information flow. There was still one person who served as a sort of “gatekeeper” for data that related to a specific project, when what was needed was a cross-departmental tool to allow everyone to have the same overview of the work. Once this type of software was produced, the sky was the limit. Now more and more companies are embracing these mind map methods, and these tools are completely changing how they accomplish their work.
