Bibliophiles with tiny homes, rejoice! The E-readers have come, and at this point we enjoy enough unique brands on the market to permit some degree of competition and innovation. Amazon’s Kindle features a substantial library of books and magazines and newspapers which are offered via their wireless data network. It can keep around 1,500 e-books, which is good, as it provides no expansion slot for added memory. The Kindle may play MP3 and AAC audio and is compatible with Windows and Mac platforms.
The battery is hard-wired into the device and is not replaceable, but the battery life is considered “good”, which could or could not be acceptable to you. The Nook is much like the Kindle concerning system compatibility and enjoys the additional convenience of an expansion slot for supplemental memory, along with a removable battery. The Sony Reader is the granddaddy of e-readers, and subsequently enjoys the benefit of having exorcised nearly all of its bugs. The Reader has also been through several updates, therefore it has been able to react to consumer forces in addition to breakthroughs in technology. Sony’s Reader can store thousands of electronic books, and more could be stuffed in with the supplement of a suggested memory card. There isn’t a book or publisher’s format which the Reader does not support, which includes ePub and PDF files. Curiously, one update the Reader has yet to offer is wireless capability, therefore each file must be transferred from a PC.
The iPad is still new enough to be a virtual unknown, despite its super-hyped and fashionably late arrival at this particular party. According to most reviews, it performs quite well as a reader, working with all of the formats that may be used with the competing e-readers, and provides a few gaming applications also. Oddly enough, Apple is choosing to market this device as a business tool, although it is completely overwhelmed in this application by almost all netbooks and Apple’s own iPhone. This will not conserve time but also space on the desk or at home.
