VoIP phone service, also known as internet phone service, works by connecting your phone to the internet. Your telephone calls are then sent over the internet as small bits of information, called packets, instead of sending them over a regular telephone wire. This type of phone service has the following pros and cons:
Digital Phone Service Pros:
• The only tax currently collected on internet phone service is the Federal 3% tax.
• Some unlimited VoIP calling plans include all of Asia.
• You can take your VoIP phone with you when you travel around the world, and call back to the US and Canada for free.
• You can get a phone number with any US area code and prefix.
• Voice-mail, Caller ID and other calling features are usually included with each plan.
Digital Phone Service Cons:
• Digital phone service can lag if your internet connection is slow.
• You have to have high speed internet service for your digital phone service to work correctly.
Landline telephone service is where a dedicated line is hooked to your house by a telephone carrier. While cable providers do install phone service into homes and offices, they provide what they call “Digital Phone Service”. Digital phone service is another name for digital phone service. Landline telephone service has the following pros and cons:
Land-line Phone Service Pros:
• Landline telephone service is technically more stable than digital phone service.
• Your old fashioned phone number gets put in the phone book, while your digital phone service phone number doesn’t.
• Old fashioned phone signals, overall, are more clear.
• 911 works automatically without putting in your address.
• You can get regular phone service without having to get internet service.
Land-line Phone Service Cons:
• Landline telephone service is more expensive than internet phone service.
• Voice-mail, Caller ID and other calling features are each an extra fee.
• Local and long distance phone service, plus an extra line for dial up internet service, cost more than high speed internet service and an unlimited VoIP calling plan.
While trying to play fair with the pros and cons of landline telephone service and VoIP phone service, it is getting so that the only reason to still have a regular phone plan is because you either can’t get fast internet service, or you really need to make sure your call quality is superb. But, with most people now using either land line phone service, or cell phones, scratching for that last two percent of call clarity isn’t worth isn’t worth all of the extra money you’ll have to pay each month.
